Tile almost never fails. What fails is what's behind it, so that's where we spend our care: waterproofing membrane behind every tiled surface, a shower pan sloped to drain the way it should, and a fan sized to actually clear the steam and meet code. Done wrong, those show up as a stain on the ceiling below, two years later. Done right, the finishes stay beautiful for decades.

A typical bathroom runs about three to five weeks. While the walls are open we can build in aging-in-place features (curbless showers, grab-bar blocking, comfort-height fixtures) if you want a bathroom that works for the long haul. And when it's time to choose tile, fixtures, and a vanity, we'll narrow the field with you so the decisions feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

Bathroom remodels: common questions
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A guest bath is usually two to four weeks on site. A primary suite takes longer, mostly because of tile work and fixture lead times. Older San Jose homes can add time if plumbing, wiring, ventilation, or subfloor repairs turn up once the walls are open, which is why we look before we price.
What is the one thing people get wrong in a bathroom?
Waterproofing. Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own. The waterproofing is the membrane underneath, with sealed seams and corners, a waterproofed niche, and a correctly sloped shower base. It is invisible once the tile is on, which is exactly why a rushed crew skips it and why a shower fails five years later.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?
A like-for-like fixture swap and new tile generally do not need one. Moving the toilet, tub, or shower drain, replacing a concealed trap or vent pipe, adding circuits, or changing the layout does. San Jose treats concealed pipe replacement as new work. We pull what the job needs and close it out with inspection.
Can you convert a tub to a walk-in shower?
Yes, and it is one of the most common requests we get. It usually involves relocating the drain, rebuilding the floor structure under the pan, and waterproofing the whole assembly properly. If you are staying in the home long term, a curbless entry is worth asking about while the floor is already open.
Should I fix the ventilation while we are in there?
Yes. A lot of older bathrooms have no exhaust fan, an undersized one, or one that dumps into the attic instead of outdoors. Moisture with nowhere to go rots framing and feeds mold behind brand new tile. Fixing it while the ceiling is open costs very little; fixing it later means opening the ceiling again.
